We Must Do More Than Watch a Movie
There is a new film out, and whether or not you agree with it, it’s makers or agenda, the terrifying truth is that human trafficking really exists around the world and in our own backyards and it is holding countless innocent people captive.
While the outcry on social media for awareness and the demand for action by Christians is welcome and past due, we must do more than watch a movie.
We must do something tangible, sacrificial, innovative and immediate with our outrage for the sake of freedom.
Mercy House Global created Fair Trade Friday to replace undignified jobs like labor trafficking and sex trafficking with dignified work because many of the teen moms in the Mercy House Global maternity homes in Kenya got pregnant due to trafficking.
The ethically produced items in Fair Trade Friday are often made by the hands of survivors of trafficking or by vulnerable people who are at-risk to being trafficked.
It is time Christians see the connection between what we buy and who is making it. If we don’t know the person behind the products we buy (our gifts, clothes, etc) the odds are that someone is being harmed in the supply chain as it makes its way to our home.
Sadly, in the past year, while the number of people being trafficked has only increased, the number of members in our ethical subscription clubs—that fight human trafficking, has decreased. Why? It’s getting harder to change the world and it’s more critical than ever for us to respond.
Hearing the sound of freedom requires action: we must listen to the voices of the vulnerable and respond with our spending dollars:
